Our Founding Fathers were geniuses in many ways. They were absolutely way ahead of their time. And one of the ways they demonstrated their genius was by creating the Electoral College.

A popular meme going around right now states correctly, “If you don’t understand the reason why we have the Electoral College, then you’re the reason why!”

I don’t imagine I have to educate the readers of this blog as to the reason why the Electoral College exists. Nevertheless, I will explain a little…

The first thing you need to understand is that the United States is not a democracy and it never has been. It’s not even a democratic-Republic. It is just a Republic. That’s it! This is the form of government guaranteed to us in the Constitution itself (Article 4 Section 4). It is what every child used to be taught when they were taught the pledge of allegiance. We pledge allegiance to the flag and to the REPUBLIC for which it stands. Not to a democracy!

This is the first and most important thing to understand. Our founders hated the idea of a democracy. In fact, James Madison, who was the chief writer of the Constitution itself said, “Democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention; have ever been incompatible with personal security or the rights of property; and have in general been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths.” Thomas Jefferson likewise wrote that, “A democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where 51 percent of the people may take away the rights of the other 49.”

And legend has it that after the Constitutional Convention in 1787, an old lady asked Benjamin Franklin, who was 81 years old by then, “Sir, what form of government have you given us?” To which Franklin replied, “A republic, if you can keep it.”

Franklin’s point is well taken. While a Republic may be the most advantageous, fairest, most profitable and secure form of government, it is not one that corrupt men appreciate. In fact, corrupt, immoral, and downright evil men will work desperately and diligently to tear down the foundation of a Republic since its systems of checks and balances HINDERS their never ending conquest for power and evil.

This is why you should never even use the word “democracy” when referring to America. Don’t make excuses for it! Stop using it. To use it is to demonstrate that you are under the control and influence of propaganda and corrupt educational institutions. Calling America a democracy is tantamount to walking around with a dunce cap on—telling the whole world that you’re an idiot!

And one of the great hallmarks of our Republic is the institution of the Electoral College. It is something that has helped to preserve our nations government as the longest standing government under a single document in the history of the world. And it is abhorred by liberals, leftists, the media, George Soros, democrats, progressives, and Satan himself.

So what is the point of the Electoral College? Well the point is simple, the Electoral College exists to prevent pure and direct democracy in our country and to eliminate, or at least minimize, the possibility for mob rule or dictatorship.

The foundation of this system is something that is not hardly taught anymore these days. It is federalism. Federalism is the idea that the Federal government would have small and limited power and that the states would be sovereign governments that could do whatever they wanted. It was a system of shared sovereignty between the states and the federal government. So a state could not rule over another state, nor could the federal government rule over a state on issues not specified in the Constitution (as clearly delineated in the 10th amendment).

The Electoral College sets up an institution where the votes of each state actually matter and therefore the heavily populated areas can’t impose their will, just by virtue of population, upon lesser populated states. This is a fundamental way in which states are respected as sovereign entities. Otherwise, a few populated states, like California, New York, Texas, and Florida could basically control the entire country!

However, time has demonstrated that the Electoral College has one major downfall, and in that sense, it is working in reverse. The downfall it has is that individual counties in states with large population centers are basically disenfranchised in national elections. This is exactly what the Electoral College sought to prevent—on a national level.

But now, because the country is so huge, and certain states are so populated, this very thing is happening WITHIN states.

California is the perfect example. A full 50% of California’s counties (geographically speaking) generally vote Republican. Yet the entire population of those counties is smaller that just Los Angeles county alone. So what happens to voters in rural, less populated areas of California? Well, they feel like their vote doesn’t count so many of them ignore national elections.

This has had the exact opposite effect that I believe our founders intended. In short, large population centers are still having a disproportionate effect and influence on the rest of the country, particularly on more rural areas within their own states.

I believe the answer to this problem is a simple one—maintain the electoral college but award an electoral vote to each candidate based on their congressional district.

It is simple since federal elections have already divided the country up into 435 districts—with each district getting their own congressional representative in the US Congress. This ensures that the will of the voters in every single congressional district, which already is awarded one elector in the Electoral College, will be represented in the Electoral College. To consider what a difference this would make, consider that California currently awards all 55 of its electors to the democrat party—guaranteed.

But guess what, over 4.4 million Californians voted for Donald Trump in 2016! That is more votes for Donald Trump from California than Idaho, Montana, Alaska, Utah, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, and Oklahoma COMBINED!!!

Currently those 4.4 million California voters have no voice in national elections. As it stands now, they might as well light their ballots on fire to keep them warm in the winter time.

But if we were to move to an Electoral College that awards an elector for each congressional district—we would no longer be disenfranchising voters, while simultaneously maintaining the value and purpose of the Electoral College.

And yes, I realize that, as a consequence, Democrats may never again be able to win national elections. But that is not the point, albeit it is a wonderful consequence. The point is to have a fair and just election process that is not rooted in the principles of a direct democracy—but rather, a Constitutional Republic.

And its not a difficult thing to do—in fact, Maine and Nebraska ALREADY DO IT that way. We just need the other 48 states to follow suit, or simply change our national election law process to ensure that everybody’s vote really does count, while preserving the foundations of our Republic that our founding fathers shed their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor to pass on to us.
